How to Recreate The Pottery Barn Ceramic Finish

If you’ve ever admired the stunning finishes on pottery pieces at Pottery Barn, you know how beautiful and unique they look. The handcrafted ceramic finish is timeless, giving each piece a textured, aged look that feels both rustic and sophisticated. After much trial and error, I finally mastered how to recreate this Pottery Barn Artisan Studio handcrafted ceramic finish myself. Today, I’m sharing my technique so you can achieve this beautiful look on your own DIY projects.

What You’ll Need to Recreate Pottery Barn Ceramic Finish

To achieve the Pottery Barn Artisan Studio finish, you’ll need a few simple supplies. The best part is that many of these items are inexpensive, and you might already have them on hand.

• Neutral matte paint colors (I used white, off-white, beige, and mushroom)
• A drywall sanding block or sandpaper
• Drywall spackle (purple)
• Gloves to protect your hands
• A sponge
• A chip brush
• Foam paint brushes
• Water for diluting paint

Step-by-Step Guide to Recreating the Pottery Barn Ceramic Finish

Follow these simple steps to recreate this beautiful finish on any pottery pieces you have—whether they’re vases, bowls, or other objects. Here’s how to get started:

1. Paint the Base Color

Start by taking your ceramic piece (bowl, vase, or any object) and painting it with a base color. For my pieces, I used white, but feel free to use any neutral color that fits your aesthetic. Make sure to use a flat or matte finish. You don’t need to cover the piece entirely, as this is just the first layer, and there will be multiple layers to come. Allow the paint to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

2. Apply Drywall Spackle To Recreate The Pottery Barn finish 

Once the base color is dry, it’s time to add the texture that gives this look its unique style. Put on gloves to protect your hands and then randomly apply purple drywall spackle to the surface of the piece. Don’t worry about smoothing it out too much—the randomness is what gives it that authentic look. Use your gloved hands to rub the spackle on, ensuring some areas are thicker than others. After the spackle has dried, it will turn white, which adds an aged appearance to the piece. Once dry, use a sanding block or sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots you don’t want. Be sure to leave some texture to keep the authentic, handcrafted feel.

3. Layer on More Paint

Now it’s time to add the other colors, one at a time. I used beige, off-white, and mushroom as my colors, but you can choose whatever neutrals you like. Apply each color randomly in different spots, letting each coat dry before applying the next one. The key is to keep things random. There’s no need for the colors to blend or match—it’s the imperfections that make each piece special. You can sponge some of the paint on for a soft texture or use a dry chip brush to create streaks and uneven brush marks. This adds more depth to the finish and mimics the aged look of pottery.

4. Add the Final Drip Layer

The last step is to achieve the final, weathered look. To do this, dilute your white paint with a little water and slowly drip it onto the piece in random spots. Let the paint naturally drip down, creating irregular patterns. This step is what gives your piece that authentic handcrafted ceramic finish, just like the ones at Pottery Barn. Allow everything to dry completely before handling.

5. Admire Your Creation!

Once your piece is dry, take a moment to admire your work. The beauty of this Pottery Barn Artisan Studio handcrafted ceramic finish is that no two pieces will look alike. Each layer of paint and spackle adds to the character of the piece, creating a rustic, timeless finish.
